School support

Dual enrolment

Some children split their week between two settings. It is not offered everywhere, and it has to be arranged between the two schools.

  • Splitting the week across two schools, for example a special school plus a mainstream school.
  • Queensland has a formal dual enrolment process for students with disability who are enrolled in a Catholic or independent school, allowing them to also attend a state special school.   • Not every state offers a formal pathway, so ask your state education department whether dual enrolment is available.
Good for your child if...
  • Needs sit between mainstream and full-time specialist placement.
  • Benefits from both intensive support and neurotypical peer interaction.
Before you decide, know this:
  • Coordination across two schools is complex and needs strong communication from both teams.
